My name is Hena Comic, and I’m originally from Bosnia but I grew up between Kelowna, Canada, and Lörrach, Germany. My academic journey began with a degree in Biology at the Albert Ludwigs University in Freiburg, where I first discovered my passion for microbiology.
To gain practical experience, I took on a managing role at a COVID-19 vaccination center, an opportunity that allowed me to explore a different, applied side of the microbiological sciences. This experience only deepened my interest in the field and ultimately led me to pursue a Master’s degree in Molecular Microbiology at the University of Vienna, which I began in 2022.
During my time in Vienna, I conducted research on the effects of ampicillin on ribosomal proteins in E. coli, and developed a novel protocol for isolating intact persister cells. Alongside my thesis work, I also collaborated on a project with Harvard University in an ancient DNA lab, where I was responsible for the preparation of powdered ancient human bones for genomic analysis.
While much of my early research focused on proof-of-concept studies and learning a broad range of laboratory techniques, I gradually realized my desire to apply microbiological knowledge in a medical context. I wanted my work to have a more direct impact on human health which led me to the field of tick-borne diseases.
Studying ticks and tick-associated disease perfectly combines microbiology and medicine, and I’m excited to continue exploring this area of research.
